My father introduced me to fishing at a very young age. Born and raised in Northern Minnesota, there was no lack of lakes to wet a line in. Dad showed me a small percentage of these lakes and the techniques needed to put fish in the boat and on the ice. As I got older, I began fishing by myself and with friends. Nothing stopped us. We would hook up the fourteen foot boat and travel around Northern Minnesota hitting lake after lake. In the winter, we wore our arms out drilling holes on lakes we thought we could give names to. Fishing began to take control of my life.

I graduated high school and got a college degree in forestry natural resources and geographic information systems. At the time, these degrees seemed realistic in my outdoor world. Geography expanded my knowledge on all the new technological resources like GPS, ArcPad, aerial photos, and lake maps needed to uncover lake structure and find new ways into those secret slab crappie lakes.

Shortly after college, I found my place back in Grand Rapids, MN. I began tournament fishing and guiding in the spring, summer, and fall months. It is now a dream come true for me. There is nothing I enjoy more than watching people’s fishing poles bend over in my Lund boat. The smile on client’s faces when they catch that hog walleye, pike, or muskie is truly one of a kind. I love introducing youngsters to the great sport of fishing, and I enjoy teaching people the skills they need to be more successful on the water.

Everyday, I try to increase my fishing knowledge; be it through reading articles, listening to seminars, watching videos, or just trying new products. Tournament fishing has taught me additional techniques and presentations over the years. Through a friend who fishes tournaments in South Dakota, I was introduced to the Fergie lure from Reel Bait Tackle. My buddies and I put it to the test in Canada this past winter for lake trout and I’ll tell you what; it drives fish mad. When your goto presentations aren’t triggering fish on a given day, throw on a Fergie and rip that thing like you mean it. You will be amazed with the outcome. Our guide service (www.hanglooseoutdoors.com) uses Reel Bait tackle to put big fish on the ice and in the boat.
